Dan Conover's musings on the power of the internet to bring human beings together. Simply one of the best blog posts I've read in ages.

"Today I understand that the impossible is coming into range." He's right. As large numbers of people get these tools under control, we'll finally see something more productive than flashcrowd performance art and friendless million-friend networks. The most expensive part of having an organization -- the getting organized part -- is about to go to zero cost, and the pool of people you can reach is now broad enough that the effects will be empowering for average people and transformative for society.

Dan shares some great and practical uses of Web 2.0 technology. I often hear people say, "That's great, but how can I use it?" when talking about various tools.

damn. y'all built it up and it was so disappointing. all that coordination and potential used to.... end hunger? nope. get rich? nope. raise the awareness of some critical cause? not at all. it was all used to make a zombie flick (and from appearances a bad one). i'm not impressed.

Zombie flicks are pretty important. Don't discount the social significance of zombie flicks. When the zombies come, you better hope a neighbor or someone has been watching zombie movies is prepared with a stockpile of shotguns and axes.

so we made a zombie flick. that's what we wanted to do. if someone else wants to save the world, they can do that: the same technologies that made this happen can make anything else happen that takes group effort. baby steps, man. baby steps. (and it's SUPPOSED to be a BAD zombie flick).

I do my part for world hunger, healing the sick, mentoring kids, raising funds for cancer and heart disease during the week. I earned my Zombie brunch. Brains. Mmmmm.

jhota: i take your point. i just thought the leadup idealistic comments by jim and jessica were overblown.

overblown. pfft. you know, I know another man who started making zombie movies, and ended up changing the free world. that man's name .. is Nelson Mandela. And now you know ..... the rest ... of the story.
