Any loss of weight or improved cardiovascular health?
This idea is genius! Are the slippers appropriate treadmill desk footwear? How is the ankle support?
I'm very seriously looking to build one of these when I move this summer.

I like to go to the gym before I start my work day for cardio and go to the gym after work to lift weights. When I no longer have the time to do this, I see one of these in my office.
add electrical muscle stimulation while you sleep, and you can have a 24-hour nonstop exercise routine
todd: I think my resting heart rate has been lowered slightly, and though my weight hasn't changed I believe I have lost some fat (and replaced the mass with new muscle) -- I have lost an inch off my waist according to my belt. I haven't been keeping track that rigorously, though.
colby: slippers aren't actually a good idea. I prefer to walk in socks or barefoot. (I'm walking barefoot right now and have done 1.7mi so far this morning.)
I saw the slippers in the picture and thought you knew something I didn't know. I guess you were just keeping your feet warm. I like wearing rollerblades.
So would it be the same effect if I wore roller blades, and tied myself off with a rope?
Chuck: actually, it probably would. The main health effects are from simply standing instead of sitting; using roller blades you'd still have to stand (and you'd be challenging your balance as well). If you had some sort of brace to keep you from falling over, you'd probably sacrifice most of the health benefits, although there has been some research showing that sitting in and of itself slows your metabolism.
Lots of developers at Borland had standing desks, with very tall chairs for when they wanted to sit.
I totally want one of these now. Too bad it wouldn't work for my office, which I share with 5 other people (noise-wise). Maybe if I ever have a home office though.
erica: the time that i used it, it was pretty quiet. not silent, though.
If you don't want to make your own you might want to check out the TrekDesk at www.trekdesk.com.
Victor: that is seriously cool! it looks like it's not shipping yet and they don't have pricing information yet. the current competitors cost in the $7k range, so when they say " TrekDesk will be offered at a fraction of the cost of current competitors" i wonder what the fraction is. if it's 80% then i'm not really willing to play. if it's 10%, then sign me up! i'm getting my home office set up and will need something like this in august/september timeframe for sure.
