Arnold Arboretum - Lilac Sunday

On Lilac Sunday, garden enthusiasts from all over New England gather at the Arboretum to picnic, watch Morris dancing, and tour the lilac collection. On the day of the event, which takes place rain or shine, the Arboretum is open as usual from dawn to dusk. Refreshments are available for purchase from 10 AM to 4 PM.

what or who is "Morris dancing" I wonder.

Morris dancing is a traditional English folk dance, performed with bells strapped to one's ankles. I have a friend (who once ran most of the technology development for BT) who is an avid Morris dancer.

Went to the Arboretum two weeks ago -- the lilacs were still in early bud, but oh the dogwoods, the magnolias, and all the mysterious Asian trees and shrubs spirited back from collecting trips decades ago by those sneaky Harvard horticulturalists...

Thanks, notgneiss. I've never seen Morris dancing, and it sounds lovely. I have been to the Arboretum maybe 7 or 8 years ago and have longed to go back. It is truly beautiful, and I agree worthy of the comparison to the Elgin Marbles.
